PANAMA FACTS

Location: Panama is in the center of the American hemisphere. It borders to the north with the Caribbean Sea, to the south with the Pacific Ocean, to the east with Colombia and to the west with Costa Rica. It has an area of 75,517 km2.

Capital: Panama City.

Population: 4,002,360 habitants.

Government: Democratic republic, presidentialist.

GDP per capita: US $13,680 (2016).

Total GDP First semester 2017: 19,288.8 million.

Climate: Panama has a tropical climate all year in the lowlands and temperate climate in the highlands. At sea level the annual average temperature is 27°C / 80.6°F. There are 2 seasons: dry from December to April and rainy from May to November.

Language: The official language is Spanish. English is frequently spoken.

Currency: Since 1904, the US dollar circulates together the Panamanian currency, the Balboa, which has parity with the United States.

Main rankings: Panama is the second most competitive country in Latin America, according to the World Economic Forum and the Latin American country with the greatest economic growth.

BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

Panama is one of the most complex and diverse biodiversity areas of the planet.

Ninth country in the world with the greatest biological diversity, according to its size.

Panama has a greater number of vertebrate animals than any other country in Central America or the Caribbean, a greater number of bird species than the United States and Canada together, and 21 times more plant species per km2 than Brazil.

Plants and flowers as in few places.

Panama houses 3.5% of the flowering plants and 7.3% of the fern species in the world. As many as 10,444 plant species have been recorded in its territory, from moss and delicate wild orchids to exotic “square trees” in the forest regions.

Whale sanctuary

The Panamanian oceans are among the best places in the world for humpback whale watching. Every year, between June and November, approximately 2,000 majestic cetaceans get close to its coasts in one of the longest mammal migrations, a journey of 10,000 km from Antarctic to the warm tropical waters of Panama.
